Stop by for a unique evening of presentations, discussions, and music!

- John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino’s experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix and Map of My Heart, published in 2007/2009, offer a comprehensive overview of the zine’s first sixty-one issues, while Thoreau at Walden(2008) is a poetic expression of the great philosopher’s experience and ideals. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, “John Porcellino’s comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive.” Porcellino’s work has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, and Korean. He currently lives in South Beloit, Illinois.

John will be talking about his own work, the integration of making comics with his everyday life, and the changes he has witnessed over the years when trying to expose independent creators to a wider audience.
http://www.king-cat.net/
http://johnporcellino.blogspot.com/

- Local comic artist Stacie Arellano will also be talking about her work.
http://www.tributewaters.com/

After the presentations, stick around for musical performances from some vital young creators. Scheduled to perform is Slag Heap, Brett Naucke, Josh Burke, Floating Gardens and Daniel Wyche.

-Slag Heap is the musical performing alias of Connor Camburn, formerly of Chicago and current Madison resident. He runs Tailings, a book and tape imprint, with Katy McCarty.
http://tailingsbooks.blogspot.com/

-Brett Naucke is a Chicago resident and co-owner and operator of the Catholic Tapes music label since 2007. He has performed music in the past under the name Face Worker, and is currently performing under his own name.
http://soundcloud.com/catholic-tapes

-Josh Burke is a Chicago resident and runs his own audio / visual label, Midnight Star Media. He performs under various aliases, such as 56K, Sky Limousine, and his own name, and has had his work released on various imprints run by his peers.

-Floating Gardens is the musical performing alias of Eric Hanss, a Chicago resident. He is the owner and operator of Field Studies, a label that produces tapes, cds, and other objects.
http://fieldstudiesimprint.blogspot.com/

***$5 (or more!!) donation heartily encouraged to help out all the folks who will be making the drive from out of town!***

And, of course, don’t forget about the main event:

Madison Zinefest 2011!

Saturday, October 22, 10AM – 6PM, Varsity Hall, Union South, 1308 W. Dayton St., Madison, WI

Facebook event listing HERE.

Come one, come all for one of the state’s premier gatherings of underground press culture.

What exactly are zines, you ask? They are magazines, books, leaflets, comics and other materials that are produced independent of the major publication system. They can be (and they are) about anything and everything, from food to queer life to music to sewing to so much more. Come visit with authors, artists, and creators from around Wisconsin and the midwest and peruse the many works on display. Exchange ideas, trade or give away your own zines and celebrate the thriving life of the printed object in the face of the digital onslaught!

There is still time to sign up for a table! Just follow the little “Sign up for a table” link to the right!

Also, take a look at the rideshare / places to crash post at your right. Some kind folks could use your help to make their Zinefest experience a reality, so consider offering a hand!

As always, thanks for your excitement and enthusiasm. Spread the word about the events above by any means you deem appropriate. Zinefest belongs to you, so go ahead and make it yours!

Zinefest is upon us! This Saturday! Open Book area at Helen C. White Hall! 11AM to 6PM!

It looks like road construction will probably still be getting in the way of things by Saturday, so if you are attending, please please do consider how this will impact your travel arrangements / parking situation.

Parking at one of the nearby ramps is still recommended as the best option for parking (no need to worry over meters).

There is a segment of Park St. that is still closed, but if you would like to park underneath Helen C. White, as of today, access is still available via Langdon St. (in front of the Memorial Union).

Please get in touch if you have any questions and we’ll see you on Saturday!

Framed within the two-year period (1976-77), in which Mark Perry published his infamous UK punk zine Sniffing Glue, Stephen Perkins’ presentation will be a hands-on workshop that examines other innovative periodicals published by artists during these two years.
C. Matthew Luther will be discussing the use of zines from poetry to political activism and the importance of the creator as an independent artist and press. Luther will also touch on the past, present and future of zines and their importance, as well the importance of the Xerox machine and it’s invention and evolution.
More about Luther can be found here: www.matthewluther.com
(In the Ethnic Studies room, on the first floor, at the opposite end of the building from the Open Book area)

These presentations are sure to be enlightening and they’ll be a great chance to conduct some dialogue with fellow zine-makers and zine enthusiasts! Locations and times are subject to change, so keep an eye / ear out the day of the fest for someone, possibly myself, shouting and pointing wildly.

And those of you with younger folks tagging along, be sure to check out Barbara Slate’s graphic novel workshop for teens!

Here is some info about parking for those who need it:
There is parking under the building, but it is metered and you need to plug the meters every two hours ($2.50 for 2 hrs). The Lake St. ramp is also quite convenient, and you won’t have to worry about feeding a meter.

Here’s some info about the parking ramp below the building here (Lot 6):
