by

There will be presenters at Madison Zinefest, it’s true!

-1PM to 3PM:
Sniffing Glue: Parallel Histories 1976-77
Framed within the two-year period (1976-77), in which Mark Perry published his infamous UK punk zine Sniffing Glue, Stephen Perkins’ presentation will be a hands-on workshop that examines other innovative periodicals published by artists during these two years.
Workshop will include copies of Sniffing Glue and the USA’s equivalent, Punk Magazine, as well as periodicals from a host of other countries including the Netherlands, Poland, UK, Brazil, Uruguay and Canada.
Stephen Perkins is a British art historian & curator with an interest in zines & artists’ periodicals. Selected writings available at the following link:

Anthony Rayson will be discussing explain how and why zines can be used as the main component of
free school education. Focus will be given to prisoner zines, for prisoners are not allowed access to computers. Rayson will introduce a few terrific prisoner writers and artists and read parts of a few letters from prisoners, explaining what zines mean to them, which is basically – everything!

-5PM to 6PM:
C. Matthew Luther will be discussing the use of zines from poetry to political activism and the importance of the creator as an independent artist and press.  Luther will also touch on the past, present and future of zines and their importance, as well the importance of the Xerox machine and it’s invention and evolution.
More about Luther can be found here: www.matthewluther.com
Milo Miller, co-founder of the Queer Zine Archive Project, will be discussing his work with zines as vehicle for advocacy.

These presentations are sure to be enlightening and they’ll be a great chance to conduct some dialogue with fellow zine-makers and zine enthusiasts! Locations and times are subject to change, so keep an eye / ear out the day of the fest for someone, possibly myself, shouting and pointing wildly.

And those of you with younger folks tagging along, be sure to check out Barbara Slate’s graphic novel workshop for teens!
